Shear connector studs, sometimes known as concrete anchors, are used in steel-concrete composite structures. They act as reinforcing anchors, locking the supporting structure to the concrete floor. The shear force between a steel beam and a reinforced concrete deck slab is a natural consequence of composite action. The presence of a shear connection prevents slip between the two components and achieves a much stiffer and stronger beam.

Through-deck welding is also possible, where the headed shear connector is welded through a formed galvanised sheet onto a steel beam. Concrete is then poured over the formed sheet and the shear connectors.

S.R. Forgings manufactures headed shear connector studs to ISO 13918 and to customer drawing, supplied with ceramic ferrules. Sizes run from 13 mm diameter up to 1¼ inch, in lengths up to 40 inch — a longer range than most suppliers hold as standard. Non-standard diameters, lengths and head dimensions are made to drawing.

Punch Shear Resistance (PSR) Studs

PSR Studs are large headed shear connectors that are welded to flat steel bars. Used for shear reinforcement in flat concrete slabs to replace stirrups and column capitals to resist the punching shear stress in the slabs.

Shear Connector Stud Uses

Shear connector studs are used wherever a steel frame is made to act compositely with a concrete slab. The most common applications are composite floor beams in multi-storey buildings, composite bridge decks, and steel-concrete composite columns. In building work they are usually welded through profiled metal decking onto the top flange of the beam before the slab is poured. In bridge work they are welded directly to the top flange of plate girders or box girders. Because the studs transfer the horizontal shear between steel and concrete, the two materials act as a single structural member, allowing shallower beams and longer spans than either could achieve alone.
